This type of ‘oude’ (old) genever contrasts with ‘jonge’ (young) genever by the nature of the distillate. The ‘jonge’ genevers are light in character, and could be compared to blended whiskies, while the ‘oude’ genevers are made with a higher percentage of malted barley and thus have more character.
