Born on a tobacco farm in 1881, Albert Bacon Blanton began working at the neighbouring Old Fire distillery (today Buffalo Trace) at the age of 16. In 1912, he became the superintendent and eventually the president of what was now the George T. Stagg distillery. Even after retiring, he continued to manage the distillery up until his death in 1959. Blanton’s—the first ever single barrel bourbon—was launched on the Japanese market in 1984 and pays tribute to this iconic figure in the world of American whiskey. This complex yet pared down bottling is characterised by notes of precious wood and divine florals, and culminates in an astoundingly diverse fruity register.
Nose : rich, unctuous. The aroma palette opens with sublime fragrances of cedar, iris and lily, which are accompanied by vanilla and spice (clove, nutmeg). Allowed to breathe, it develops more fruity registers (prune, date) and cereal notes (maize). Now more honeyed (lime blossom), citrus fruit zest (grapefruit, lemon) gradually brings more energy.
Appearance : vieil or soutenu.
Palate : lively yet delicate. At first, a fine layer of salted butter caramel coats a wealth of different white fruits (apple, peach, pear). These fruits release their sweet and tangy juices across the palate. Finally, vanilla pod flavours bring a voluptuous ending.
Overall : long, smooth. The powdery (cocoa, grated ginger) and creamy (flan, coconut milk) finish continues into fresh herbaceous tones, liquorice and gentian root. On the retro-nasal olfaction, new tropical fruits (mango, persimmon, guava) make a perfectly timed entrance.
