CHARTREUSE Elixir Végétal

In 1605, the Maréchal d'Estrées offered the Chartreux monks of the Chartreuse de Vauvert in Paris the manuscript of an "Elixir of Long Life", composed of 130 medicinal and aromatic plants. This Elixir, developed by Brother Jérôme Maubec in 1737, took the name of Elixir Végétal de la Grande Chartreuse.
Today, in their distillery in Voiron (Isère), the Chartreux monks continue to elaborate this Elixir, the secret of which they have carefully kept for four centuries. The virtues of the Elixir Végétal de la Grande Chartreuse lie primarily in the use of plants, sugar and honey in their natural state, to the exclusion of any artificial product.
