WHISKY MAGAZINE & FINE SPIRITS - N°44 - Autumn 2011
Strong alcohol and the weaker sex are too often the story of a misunderstanding, of two worlds that look at each other with mistrust and for the wrong reasons. Yet women have often played a role in the history of spirits and the cocktail world. Charles MacLean and Dave Broom look back at the careers of two of them, Bessie Williamson (Laphroaig) and Rita Taketsuru (Nikka). Andrew Faulkner draws up portraits of the great female figures of mixology in the USA, right up to Ann Tunnerman, the founder of Tales of the Cocktails. As a result of inheritance (see the article on sons and daughters by Dominic Roskow), many women now run estates in Armagnac. Here's a look back at the oldest French brandy, with tastings (48 of them!). This issue is also an opportunity to bring together five exceptional women in Cognac for an informal discussion about their place in a world that is still very much male-dominated. Finally, Harry's Bar in Paris celebrates its 100th anniversary. Serge Valentin recalls his ten best tastings in this legendary bar, now a hundred years old. Happy anniversary!
