IWAMURA was founded in 1797 in Iwamura, Ena District of Gifu Prefecture. At that time, the Watarai family started to produce sake and paid an annual tribute to Iwamura Castle.

At the time of its establishment, it also produced miso and soy sauce. That is why the name of the brewery in Japanese is Iwamura jôzô (fermentation/brewing) and not Iwamura shuzô (brewery). It was in the middle of the 20th century that it devoted itself exclusively to the production of sake. Usually, sake houses take the name of their founder, but it is not the case of Iwamura brewery which bears the name of the city where it is located. In fact, its primary aim is to emphasize the terroir, the trademark of the sake it produces.

IWAMURA's style offers traditional sakes of great freshness and fluidity, highlighting the quality of the water (from the Kiso River in the Gifu region) and the "Hida no homare" rice, produced only in the Gifu region. Onna Joshu 3 Year Old Koshu is a sake aged for 3 years, showing a different style from the other sakes of the Onna Joshu range.
