The result is an exceptional whiskey that superbly combines Irish delicacy and French craftsmanship.
The Tronçais forest is one of the most beautiful forests in France, covering almost 11,000 hectares. Above all, it's Europe's finest oak forest. The Tronçais oak has a long-standing reputation. Pruned regularly, these old trees have few knots, a pinkish color and a particularly fine grain... a boon for coopers. Such is the case of Taransaud, with its T5 casks, exceptional casks produced in limited series from Tronçais wood, with staves aged for five years in the open air. Each barrel is produced in a dedicated workshop, and signed by a Compagnon du Devoir or Meilleur Ouvrier de France. The reputation of these barrels is well-established, thanks to the high degree of skill required to make them.
In 2017, Midleton master distiller Kevin O'Gorman and his team acquired a number of these T5 casks before filling them with a batch of Midleton single grain and single pot still whiskies distilled in the 1980s and 2000s and aged in old bourbon casks.
Finally, the whiskey is packaged in a sublime duck-blue bottle, inspired by the orchid in the Midleton Very Rare logo. The box is crafted by woodwork specialists Manufacture Jacquemin, also produced from Tronçais oak, alongside laser-cut illustrations inspired by the forest.
With a limited number of bottles available, Midleton Very Rare Forêt de Tronçais is a luxurious and special edition resulting from the meeting of the pinnacle of Irish whiskey and the pinnacle of French oak.
"We may have created the pinnacle of Irish whiskey with Midleton Very Rare, but we're constantly driven by the desire to push the boundaries and create something new. Midleton Very Rare Forêt de Tronçais represents our relentless pursuit of perfection and innovation, while remaining true to Midleton's inimitable character and DNA." Kevin O'Gorman.
Nose : Oak enriched aromas with delectable fruit notes of poached pears, caramelised apples and orange zest. Additional notes of honeycomb and toasted hazelnut that evolve in tandem with the building aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans. The woodland spices are bought to the fore by the elegant and measured influence of the fine-grained French oak, adding nuanced characteristics that enhance the pot still spices and floral grain whiskeys in this complex and aged blend.
Palate : Herbal at first with notes of fresh peppermint and sage amongst the succulent orchard fruits and zesty orange. The oak's subtle tannins complement the chocolate-dipped honeycomb and sweet vanilla, adding to the silken texture that is synonymous with Midleton's pot still and grain whiskeys. Elevated wood spices add further complexity to this intricate whiskey.
Overall : An exquisitely long finish. The fruits and spices are enveloped by the enchanting nature of the toasted wood, showcasing a truly harmonious balance between Irish Whiskey and French Oak.
