Hanyu was distilled in 1990 and bottled cask strength in 2011, after an initial maturation in hogsheads and maturation in American oak puncheons. The now very famous and coveted Card Series was born of a meeting between Ichiro Akuto and cartoonist Takeshi Abe. Ichiro Akuto was trying to sell the casks from his grandfather's distillery. The playing card theme was appealing: recognisable, the bottle labels stood out from the crowd and were an invitation to collect. To distinguish the contents as well, each whisky was matured in different types of cask, some of them highly original, after an initial, more traditional maturation in hogsheads. The series began in 2005 and ends in 2014 with the two jokers, the monochrome and the polychrome. There are 58 bottlings: 52 cards, the four doubles and the two jokers. Limited edition of 585 bottles.
