The stone tanks, covered with a kerosene coating and built 250 years ago, have been declared a national heritage site. Cachaça Santo Grau Coronel Xavier Chaves is produced in the oldest still active alhambic in Brazil, located in Coronel Xavier Chaves, on Estrada Real, near Tiradentes and São João Del Rey. Stored in stainless steel barrels for six months, it has an alcohol content of 40%. This cachaça from Santo Grau is perfect for drinking with citrus in caipirinhas. In 2009 and 2011, it even managed to achieve a higher ranking in Playboy magazine for its fabulous taste.
