In 1993, Fritz Maytag, the owner of the Anchor Brewing Company micro-brewery, decided to open his own distillery, reviving a tradition that dates back to the 18th century, when most American whiskeys were made with malted rye. This distillery, named Old Potrero, sits on the heights of San Francisco, in the neighbourhood from which it takes its name, Potrero Hill. The flavour and aroma palette is packed full of hot, animal, mineral and root sequences that showcase its deeply mature and complex character and yet maintains the fruity, floral freshness for which this niche rye is so well-known.

Nose : Elegant, ethereal. At first hot (Cayenne pepper, paprika), animal (bacon) and with a lovely chocolate bitterness, the nose becomes increasingly tropical (banana, pineapple) and spicy (clove). Heady florals (lily, iris, hyacinth) gradually fill the air.

Appearance : cuivre orangé.

Palate : Lively, invigorating. The flavour palette brings roots (gentian), fruit (orange, quince), rich, sweet notes (spice bread, toffee) and grains (rye), as well as a delicious vanilla dimension. Like the nose, it then develops an increasingly tropical register (persimmon, mango, guava).

Overall : Long, silky. Perfectly summarising the nose and palate, the finish invites us to enjoy flambéed banana and mango coulis. The retro-nasal olfaction is both floral (lavender, purple lilac) and deeply mineral (slate, charcoal). Intense rye aromas escape from the empty glass.
