The Bruichladdich distillery was founded in 1881 by Barnett Harvey. Closed from 1929 to 1936, it doubled its production capacity in 1975, going from two to four stills. Mothballed again in 1983 and 1995, it was bought by bottler Murray McDavid in 2000 and sold to the Rémy Cointreau group in 2012. With a phenol content of 40 ppm, the first Port Charlotte distillate was released in July 2001.
