OBAN
A port of call on the road to the Hebrides, Oban is a perfectly sheltered port, making it the capital of the West Highlands and also the natural link between the mainland and the islands. Founded in 1794, the Oban distillery was built by the Stevenson brothers. Despite undergoing a large refurbishment in the 1890s, it remains one of the oldest and smallest distilleries in Scotland. Because of the limited space between the cliffs and the sea, the bustling little village of Oban has always remained closely nestled around the distillery. This natural limitation on expansion explains why the distillery has always found it difficult to satisfy an ever-increasing demand.
