This drink made from extracts of green anise, fennel, star anise and liquorice wood, with a strength of 45%, was born from the audacity of one man in 1932, Paul Ricard. Defying the law prohibiting the marketing of aniseed-flavoured spirits, Ricard secretly macerated a mixture ("pastis" in Provençal) of aromatic plants. Taking advantage of the first paid holidays in 1933, Ricard distributed this drink to be shared as an aperitif, a living tradition in the South of France. In order to stand out from the competition, the Ricard brothers decided to sell their aniseed-flavoured aperitif in a one-litre bottle. Traditionally, this aperitif is drunk well chilled with ice cubes, respecting the rule of one part pastis diluted in 5 parts water. Today, Pastis Ricard is the best-selling aniseed-flavoured spirit in the world.
